Preventative asthma inhaler containing a long-acting beta-2 receptor antagonist
Salmeterol is used to treat conditions characterised by a narrowing of the airways, like asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
Serevent contains the active ingredient salmeterol, which is a long-acting beta 2 agonist. The medicine is administered directly to the lungs, using an inhaler, where it can get to work to alleviate the symptoms of asthma.
Salmeterol causes the muscles in the airways to relax, allowing them to open up and for air to pass in and out with ease.
How to take it
You should use Salmeterol as directed by your doctor. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Salmeterol is a preventer inhaler and as such it cannot relieve an acute asthma attack. It is important to carry your reliever inhaler with you at all times, so you can use it in case of an emergency.
Salmeterol can cause dizziness, nervousness or chest tightness. The full list of reported side effects can be found in the patient leaflet, please read this information carefully before using this medicine and speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you require further information.
