Premature Ejaculation

There is a new prescription only medication for the treatment of Premature Ejaculation. Clinical trials have shown it to be an effective treatment, in some cases doubling the time between stimulation and ejaculation.

No two medical professionals can agree on an exact definition of Premature Ejaculation but there is a general consensus that it is a widespread problem not just confined to the young or sexually inexperienced. For some men for whom it is a regular problem, there has really been little remedy other than to just put up with it.

Obviously, this is not a satisfactory situation for the individuals concerned so this new medical treatment could be exactly what the “doctor ordered”. To find out if pharmacological treatment is right for you, please check out our information about premature ejaculation, facts about the treatment, and its limitations.

Premature Ejaculation – the facts

Premature ejaculation generally means coming within less than 2 minutes of sexual stimulation. Some men might consider this to be acceptable in which case there is no problem. You need to deal with premature ejaculation if it is causing you and/or your partner distress and is having an impact on your sex life. If it is causing you anxiety or making you depressed, it is definitely time to get help.

Getting treated – your options

At Prima-med, we believe in setting out your options and a prescription treatment is just one of a number of choices available. It is predictably one of the more appealing options, firstly because there is a good chance it will clear up the problem and secondly, the traditional treatment methods all have important drawbacks. But it needs to be prescribed with care.

Some things to bear in mind. Studies have shown that with heterosexual couples, there is a tendency for the man to ejaculate earlier than normal and this is nature’s way of improving conception rates. More recent studies have shown that levels of serotonin are also a big factor in the ejaculation process and that the lower the level the more likely it is that the man will ejaculate prematurely.

Traditional treatments

Condoms or sprays - can be very effective in delaying ejaculation by reducing the sensitivity of the penis nerve endings. Condoms with Lidocaine inside them are available as are sprays to apply to the penis. Another great option is Emla cream. This contains both Prilocaine and Lidocaine. However one of the things men complain about is that sensitivity can be so reduced as to impact their enjoyment of sex. Not only that but the treatments can also reduce vaginal sensitivity too meaning your partner’s pleasure is diminished as well.

Sex therapy – not a great if you are easily embarrassed. Techniques are taught by therapists such as the Masters and Johnson method which involves squeezing the head of the penis or stopping stimulation before ejaculating.

Counselling – again not ideal if you have difficulty talking over embarrassing issues. Counselling though is essential to deal with any associated depression or anxiety.
