Influenza, more commonly known as the flu, is a highly contagious respiratory disease. Influenza symptoms can vary and can generally hit anyone at any time. The flu can be a serious illness, particularly for mature populations aged 50 and older, and those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and asthma.

The Influenza virus can strike at anytime of the year. However autumn and winter are the most active seasons. These are also the seasons when migratory birds bring with them an increased threat of avian bird flu.
Influenza at a Glance
- Influenza is caused by one of two viruses - the influenza A type virus or the influenza B type virus. Both conditions carry the same symptoms.
- It is estimated that 10% - 15% of the population develop flu in any one year and that 3,000 to 4,000 deaths per year can be attributed to the complications of flu.
- The flu normally spreads from person to person in the form of respiratory droplets released from coughing and sneezing. Carriers can infect others one day before they begin experiencing symptoms and up to five days after they become sick.

- Influenza can lead to certain complications including bacterial pneumonia, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions like congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes. Children and adults may develop sinus problems and ear infections.
