Manufacturer
Stiefel Laboratories (UK) Limited
Class
Topical antibiotic
Indication
Topical acne treatment
Bacteria in the skin cause spots. When bacteria feed on sebum produced by the sebaceous glands they produce waste products and fatty acids which irritate the sebaceous glands causing inflammation.
Duac contains clindamycin. Clindamycin is a topical antibiotic which kills acne-causing bacteria, in particular propionebacterium acnes. It stops bacteria from spreading by actively preventing it from forming a protective cell wall, which causes bacteria to breakdown and die.
By controlling the number of bacteria in the skin clindamycin reduces the risk of infection and inflammation.
Benzoyl peroxide is a keratolytic. It works by breaking down keratin in the skin structure which has an exfoliating effect on the top layer of skin. This helps to combat comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) which block the sebaceous glands.
Benzoyl peroxide also helps to reduce the amount of sebum produced by the sebaceous glands.
Active Ingredient
Clindamycin phosphate and benzoyl peroxide
How to take it
Apply a thin layer of Duac to the affected area once daily. There is no need to massage the product in as it will be absorbed by the skin. Wash your hands after use.
Other information
Dalacin T can cause dryness and irritation of the skin. If you are concerned about any side effects of the medication you should consult your doctor.
The combination of clindamycin phosphate and benzoyl peroxide makes for a highly effective acne treatment, but it normally takes 4-6 weeks before any results can be seen. It is important to apply the treatment every day.
Duac can have a bleaching effect, so avoid contact with fabric and hair.
